The “non-cowards” of Monterrey – Los “no-cobardes” de Monterrey

November 23, 2010

By Lourdes Toussaint, KF13, Mexico

A few months back, the owner of Cemex, one of the biggest Mexican companies and one of the world’s largest cement firms, caused a stir in the country by stating in his twitter account that those who are leaving the city of Monterrey are “cowards”. Due to the violence and the war between drug cartels in the north of the country, many people are choosing to leave this city. However, there are also many “non-cowards” or even “brave” people that are choosing to stay, to defend the city where they grew up and to continue with their work and everyday life despite the dangers.

And that’s the people I want to talk about. Some of them are entrepreneurs that still look for opportunities where many think that there are none. It’s not easy for everyone to leave their city and everything behind. There are people who have to stay and keep fighting. These “non-cowards” are not fighting with guns, but instead, they are fighting by proving that there are good and valuable people and that things can still be done the right way.

Abigail, Margarita and Juana from the group "Alcatraz"

Some of these people can be found in the lending groups of Credituyo, made up of low income women who have started their own business. One group in particular, “Alcatraz” is very thankful for the loans because it has enabled them to set a good example to their children. They have been able to show them that through hard work, they can improve the quality of their lives. Another group, “Pequeñas Emprendedoras” (“Little Entrepreneurs”) verbalized their concerns about the difficult situation the whole city is facing, and acknowledged that their profits are allowing them to make improvements to their houses to make them safer.

These are only some examples of the people that are currently bringing hope to Monterrey nowadays. When they receive support in the form of microcredits to grow their businesses their whole environment improves in some way. Their honesty, enthusiasm and positive example extend throughout their neighborhoods.

Certainly, the pressing issue of drug-related violence in Monterrey and other cities of Mexico needs reforms in many areas such as the police, criminal-justice institutions, government corruption, and gun laws among others. Giving microcredits to the “non-cowards” is just a way of providing support to their communities and reinforcing the positive efforts. It will not solve the big problem of violence in the city but for sure it is something we can all do to bring hope and support to people who really need it.
