Because Kiva lenders are social investors, the crowdfunded capital from Kiva's website can help places and organizations that commercial capital isn’t willing or able to serve, including countries and regions affected by conflict, war and political unrest. In my time working for Kiva as Field Support Specialist for Francophone Africa and the Middle East and Portfolio Manager for Francophone and North Africa, I’ve had the privilege of working with a variety of microfinance institutions (MFIs) serving conflict-affected areas such as Palestine, Mali and the Democratic...

In 2008, Dave Smith was seeking a project for his seventh-grade students that would demonstrate the value of “paying it forward.” He first discovered Kiva when he was invited by a friend and it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for – an actionable way to teach students about global development. So Dave put forth a challenge to his school and local community in New Holland, PA: raise one million dollars for Kiva borrowers. The social studies classes would be using microfinance and Kiva U as a vehicle for learning about other cultures and geography. Now in its 6th year, the...

International Volunteer Day couldn't come at a better time in the Kiva office. Last week, we passed a major milestone with over $500 million dollars lent to borrowers around the world. And this never could have happened without the hard work and dedication of our incredible volunteers that work behind the scenes.

“The contributions of volunteers are vital to Kiva's success whether they contribute in our office, with our partners abroad, or working remotely,” said Kiva Fellows Program Director Jacob Schultz. “Simply put: without their effort...

Entrepreneur Corey Rennell saw that a lot of consumer-packaged goods were much more focused on profit than they were on peoples’ health and decided to do something about it. He founded CORE Foods on Earth Day 2010, significant because it is a nonprofit packaged food company that is good for you, good for the planet and good for the local community.

Following the devastation from Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, we reached out to our family of Field Partners, borrowers, Fellows and field staff to check on their safety and well-being. We wanted to share those updates -- including additional ways you can help -- as we receive them here.

We've also received a lot of interest in forgiving loans for those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, and our Field Partners are currently going through the process of assessing the situation with each of their clients. Since those Field Partners are in the... Continue Reading >>

With Halloween behind us and harvest season coming to an end, the dormant months begin for many agricultural workers around the world. After planting, sowing and nurturing their crop, farmers see the harvest months as a measure of their productivity -- and hopefully -- a time of prosperity.

For those of us who aren’t directly involved in agriculture, fall is often seen as a time for celebration with family, although many of those celebrations are in fact tied to the harvest season. For example, Rome’s holiday, Cerelia, celebrates...

When asked to point to Suriname on a map, many people would be hard pressed to find it. The small country located at the top of South America is home to just over half a million people -- smaller than the population of San Francisco.
