This past Wednesday, March 4th, we had the pleasure of hosting an event in Oakland, Ca. in honor of International Women’s Day and the announcement of the new Kiva Oakland Hub in partnership with Centro Community Partners. Oakland has been, and continues to be, a thriving Kiva U.S. Hub with over 800 loans dispersed throughout the city. As a part of our monumental celebration, we unveiled a mural encouraging event attendees from all over the Bay Area to write what “A powerful woman is...” to them.

For nearly 15 years, the Kiva community has become a spark of hope and support for over 2.8 million ambitious, multi-tasking, powerful women in 98 countries. This incredible, hardworking community has chosen to celebrate and empower women by funding over $1 billion in loans to women borrowers over the years.

That doesn’t happen in one day. This happens every day.

This post was written by Gabriela Aleman, Kiva's Impact Investments Fellow for Latin America, during her travels.

Something that I’m so amazed by is how food can illustrate changes experienced by communities over generations. Traveling around the world, or even around the corner to a new restaurant, allows you to taste culture through a shared interest. By using food as my critical lens, I learned about the impact of climate change on global farming.

As a Fellow, you have the...

So, what’s it like working on the Community Support and Engagement (CS) team at Kiva?

On the surface, the experience of responding to inquiries all day seems to be a bit straightforward. Open a case, read a question, concern, or feedback, and find the most appropriate answer to it. Easy, right?

If your stomach is rumbling and begging for tantalizing snacks, street vendors are a great option. Vendors’ delicious and affordable food often represents their passion for sharing their culture. In addition to their own unique carts and treats, each vendor has a story of how they started their business.

Many people dream of owning their own house. Home is where you build your memories. Shelter is a basic human need.

Isbelia lives with her husband and her 1-year-old child in a rural area near San Vincente, El Salvador. As a mobile nurse, she travels to the surrounding communities to provide medicine, conduct check-ups and give injections. She also sells clothes from her home to contribute to the household income.

As a new or frequent lender, there may be times when you’re confused about the process of Kiva loans.

Well, we have answers!

Kiva loan applications are facilitated in two ways, by Field Partners (partner loans) and directly by Kiva (direct loans), that enable us to reach the greatest number of people around the world. For most loans outside the United States, borrowers apply to a local Field Partner, a local organization that manages the Kiva loan process. For entrepreneurs in the United States and...
